Why I loved this week

Untitled-1Well, the time has come. My daughter has decided that her toys are way cooler than mom, and she would much rather hang out in her room and play with all of her cool stuff than hang out with boring ol mom. And while it’s a little insane seeing her grow up so fast, I’m relieved that she’s finally getting into all of her toys that take up every inch of space in that room, and I do have to admit that it is nice to get some things done around here. And I love hearing her in there, blabbing away and turning everything into a drum set.

This week, the Creative Collective started on The Nectar Collective, and our first prompt was to choose a word for 2014 and make something creative with it.

I chose simplify because I really want to work on simplifying my life and slowing down a little. I have a closet full of clothes I never wear and it stresses me out every time I look at it, I have a craft closet that has gone complete bonkers with projects that I barely touched. I need to simplify my closet, simplify my crafts and simplify my routine. I try to do too much of everything, and end up falling short. I am slowly learning to focus on one goal until it’s done and move on from there.

I’m choosing to let go of anything that causes unnecessary stress, and zoning in on what matters. I’m choosing to allow myself some creative time every day, because I need it. I tend to get so worked up about things, and when it comes down to it…my life is pretty simple.

And so far, it has worked! I finished more by doing that than by trying to do everything at once. I finished my cork/chalkboard that I have been putting off forever and I was actually able to make cookies AND coffee cake this week. What the what?!

The cake was so crumbly that I had to eat it with a spoon, which I was totally fine with.

I got to share Print Therapy‘s story this week, and I was so excited about how excited they were about it. When you write about someone else and their business, it can be a little nerve-wrecking. You are putting that person’s name out there, and it can be a truly amazing experience…or it can be horrible. Luckily, this was a particularly amazing experience. I also purchased this Valentines card from them, and I will continue supporting their business in the future. Because they’re awesome.

And, finally. I got this package that I ordered from Wilderess, and I love everything about it. I got an apple scented 20 hr candle, two cinnamon chapsticks and they included a little tealight! It came with a cute little bag and was shipped with eco-friendly packaging.

A Burts Bees devotee, I was a little weary of trying another chapstick, but I love these! And they’re less waxy. I’m definitely sticking with them. Sorry, Burt.

Weekly Wishes

One of the hardest things for me to comes to terms with is that I need to understand and set my own limits. I always push myself to do the most that I possibly can in one week, and without fail, I always come up short. Something always comes up and I never have time to do the things I set out to do. Then it dawned on me…what if I set out to do less things and gave 100% to the things I do?

I’ve never picked a word for the year. That always felt a little silly to me, and I never had felt a strong connection to any one wordI saw a lot of bloggers post their word for the year, and thought about what my word would be. Then it hit me: simplify. Simplify my schedule, simplify my house, simplify my routine, simplify my life.

This is a simple list of what I hope to achieve this week. I stuck to what was most important to me at the moment, and will build from there.

  • Set up Heather as a partner on my blog – I made the difficult decision to put a hold on Baby Burrito Collective right now. As part of my attempt to simplify my life, I took a step back and realized that I was putting a lot of time and money into something and I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of it. I had one member and she stuck with me through all the changes. I still want to help her promote her work, so Heather is now going to be my very first partner on my blog! There will be more about her later, but I need to get her added first!
  • Finish my cork board – It’s so close to being done! I just need to staple on the fabric, and attach the back! Can’t wait to hang that beauty up, and finally use it!
  • Write on my blog daily – I have decided to not blog on the weekends, but I would like to post something once a day during the week.
  • Start my coffee can planter project – I have been given the wonderful opportunity to contribute to Childhood Magazine in Sacramento, and this is the project I am writing about! I just need to get a few supplies and I hope to have it done by this weekend.
  • Make one recipe from scratch – I don’t really make boxed anything, but I do use store-bought pasta, bread and tortillas (for now), and I don’t see any chance of me making cheese in the near future. So when I say from scratch, I mean all the way. We need a healthy treat in the house so I’m thinking of making some cookies this week.
  • Practice yoga once – Since I haven’t been able to get a yoga routine down, I’m challenging myself to at least get in one practice. If I do more, great. But I need to do it at least once. I can already feel my body tightening up a lot more, and my stress level getting higher.
  • Update products on Sweet MariposaI just need to take more photos of what Kandyce made and list them individually.

Do you set goals for the week? If so, what are they? Join the Weekly Wishes link-up at Nectar Collective and connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram and Pinterest to share and motivate each other!

Homemade for the Holidays: Sales!

As I have said before, part of my Creative Business Journey is to share stories of people who have started their own businesses and inspire me to keep doing what I’m doing. With that in mind, this week’s My Creative Business Journey post is interrupted by a listing of all the small businesses I know that will be hosting sales online this weekend! I know that sometimes buying from handmade/small businesses can be tough because it usually means spending a little more, so this list might help lighten the load a little.

I recently wrote about Alison for my Yo Momma Monday series and have felt so inspired by her slow gifting manifesto. She sells handmade heirloom celebration countdowns, all made in her home studio. She sources most of her items and packaging from independent/local businesses.

Let me just say, best coupon code I have ever seen. Ever. Melissa and Nicholas discovered a mutual love for handmade paper items after planning their wedding. How freaking cute is that? They have a lot of meaningful cards for all the occasions, like this sweet anniversary card. I can’t wait to share their full story in my Meet the Maker series soon!

dylbug – Free shipping

Leslie started this company after her first son was born and she wanted some hip clothes for him with a personal touch. Now a mama of three, she is always working on adorable new graphics. I was just introduced to this shop through Facebook, and I think I might be in love.

Home Grown Books20% off entire site | Code: shopsmall

My little one loves books. She likes to flip through them, and mostly to eat them. Home Grown Books are all art-based and eco-friendly books, made through an entirely green process. The paper is recycled and sturdy (good for those inquisitive mouths) and the books are 5.5″ by 6.25″ – perfect for little ones! There are seven books in a set, and the artist of each set is spotlighted on the website – which I think is amazing, and unfortunately isn’t done enough.

Simply Mad Jewelry15% off entire order | Code: SPARKLE15

I have come to the realization that I won’t be wearing jewelry for a long time. At least until my daughter stops pulling at literally everything I wear. Not that I wore too much jewelry in the first place, but I do have a special place in my heart for fabric rings like the one above! Madeline makes all of her jewelry by hand, and she takes custom orders.

You can also find a listing of shops with holiday sales on Omiyage – a crafty blog featuring the amazing Washi tape. I actually went on to Oh My Handmade to announce I was going to compile this list so people could promote their sales, when I found out that she was doing the same thing! A lot of these lovely people are from that community so there may be the same shops on her list. I’m going to head over there as well, to see if there are any sales I missed out on!

If you are hosting a sale this weekend, or you know an awesome shop that is and I didn’t know about it, please leave a link in the comments and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #shopsmallsales. You can also find more holiday sales on my Pinterest. If anything, I hope this inspires you to shop small and handmade this holiday season.
