Gettin fit: 365 days of yoga/ journey to the skirt

gettin fit: journey to the skirt

Current weight: 152

Goals: 2 clean meals per day, 1 hour of exercise a day (30 min yoga, 30 min cardio)

I did really good this week with my daily yoga. But when I missed a day yesterday, everything kind of felt off. I was a good day for sure, but something was missing. When you get into a groove, just taking one day off can really throw you for a loop!

So I got back into the groove this morning and I instantly felt better. Not that the yoga practice was easy by any means. Although the 30 day Challenge with Do You Yoga is over (which I am NOT pleased about!), I’m still looking up their videos on YouTube and following my favorite instructor, Erin Motz. She’s kind of insane, but she also toasted the last day of the challenge with red wine, so she’s also kind of amazing.

Aside from working out, the diet has been going so-so. I know what I should and should not eat, and I’m definitely a believer in the “out of convenience” theory. I genuinely enjoy fruit, vegetables, whole grains and other awesome healthy food. Seriously. But when it’s not easily available, I have a hard time staying focused. So that’s where my problem is. And with that…I have found some yummy food to have for the 4th of July BBQ’s and parties coming up!

First of all…check out this clean strawberry lemonade from The Gracious Pantry! It would be perfect mixed with Iced Tea for an Arnold Palmer remix. I honestly cannot wait to try it. Like, tomorrow. I’ll probably try it tomorrow.

I’ve come to realize that I don’t actually use a lot of the healthy recipes that I post…all because the people that I cook for don’t want to venture that far out from their normal palette. Let them cook for themselves, you say? No thank you. If I honestly let Sam fend for himself, he would just eat a bag of chips and be perfectly fine. I’d rather just save the adventurous food for when I’m cooking for myself and stick to the regular food for them. So I’ll be posting some weird, crazy food along with normal food. And when it comes to BBQ, it will have to be normal food since you don’t typically BBQ for yourself. And since I don’t know how to operate such a machine quite yet.

Citrus grilled chicken from The Gracious Pantry would be perfect for our house. You can even cut it up and put it in your tacos! Or make a lil chicken flatbread sandwich. Now I’m not really a meaty kind of girl, so for the girls and boys who would rather veggies…here’s an option!

Grilled Cumin-Lime Zucchini Quesadilla from Naturally Ella – This looks amazing and I think I could even talk some carnivores I know to try this out. I found this website through BuzzFeed’s 38 Awesome Vegetarian Grilling Recipes and I fell in love with the site. She even has recipes for the bulk bins….which I’ve never seen on a website before!

Goals: No soda or fast food/ Yoga twice a day. No execeptions

Let me tell you how exciting it is to make a Trader Joe’s trip! It’s like Christmas every time I walk in there and smell that wonderful aroma in the air. I looked at the Clean Eating grocery list from Gracious Pantry and it helped me stay way more on track than just going at it all willy-nilly.

Now that I’ve gotten into this diet for a while now, I think I know what food is good for you and what is maybe not so good. It’s not hard to stay motivated when I have all the food I feel I need in the house. The hardest part is when you’re not stocked and there are so many easy temptations around.

I just need to stay focused on my goals and understand that while there will be bad days, the good days need to be really good. Check out my new favorite breakfast: sprouted wheat bagel with hummus and avocado and a bowl of fruit. I will never stop eating wheat. Sorry. I love it.

So I pretty much stayed on track with my 365 days of yoga. I only missed one day this week because I didn’t have a mat at my moms and my poor, bad knee would have slipped if I did it on just the hardwood floor.

As you may know, it is incredibly hard to photograph yourself while in a yoga flow, so I either do it when I can pause for a moment, or just take a picture of myself being weird. I’ve been following the 30 Day Challenge on Do You Yoga. I’m going to continue following Erin Motz, who runs the challenge, after it’s over. She’s super rad and I didn’t realize how lame some of the yoga teachers are until I had her. Check her out. She’s on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube too.

You can keep up with my yoga pictures on Instagram and check out my yoga and clean eating inspiration on Pinterest. If you want to join the challenge, post photos of yourself practicing yoga daily and use the hashtag #365daysofyoga on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. If you miss a day, it’s cool. Just pick it up the next day!

Goal: No soda or fast food/ practice yoga once in the morning – no excuses

I’m actually surprised that I lost weight and didn’t gain weight after last week. And I know what the problem is. It’s convenience…with a little dose of lack of willpower. We didn’t get any groceries and since I don’t drive, I was left to eat whatever was around the house, or what was brought to me.

This meant some unhealthy food. And then we had a BBQ on Fathers Day, and that was definitely NOT healthy. But I maintained my yoga practice (although I did take a few days off) and I’ve gotten to the point where I’m considering training to get my teaching certificate so I can teach yoga.

It will take a while, of course. I need to save up some money in order to pay for the certificate, and I need to find some time to dedicate to this. My goal is to be able to teach momma and baby yoga classes and prenatal yoga classes in Stockton. I would also need a car for this, so this goal is something that I will need to work on.

I also saw this on Pinterest today and with the nice weather, I think I will make some use out of it!

Image belongs to iTunes

You can download a free podcast from Eion Finn on iTunes and take your computer outside for your yoga practice! How cool is that! The baby LOVES being outside so this could definitely work. She could either hang out with me while I workout or she could bounce along in her jumper.

I’m still doing the 30 day challenge with Erin Motz on Do You Yoga, but this is also something I want to try out. I’m trying to incorporate yoga into my life as much as I can. It brings me a lot of peace, along with a good workout. I have been slacking on practicing for the last couple of days but I’m pumped to get back in it.

My biggest issue is that danged food! I have been looking at Gracious Pantry for inspiration and she posts recipes that look pretty easy and tasty. I’m trying to get into the clean lifestyle by eliminating one dirty food per week rather than going balls to the wall. I don’t have the money or motivation to go balls to the wall right now! And I think if I just try substituting clean food for dirty food, I’ll stick with it more. I’ll make sure to post any recipes that I am successful at making something good!

If I equip myself with a clean lifestyle and some daily yoga, I’ll feel good about myself, no matter how much I weigh.

Goal for the week: No fried food/ yoga twice a day

journey to the skirt

So, last week wasn’t as successful as I thought it would be. We were running low on groceries and since I don’t drive, I have to wait until my very busy boyfriend has time to go grocery shopping. Or I sweet talk a friend or family member to take me, but I try to avoid that until it’s necessary!

So, we ended up with a lot of fast food, and pizza…which is not helpful when you’re trying to get back into that skirt! I did keep up with doing yoga once a day, and sometimes I even did it twice! I did end up having a couple soft drinks since we were out of tea (gasp!) and I needed a little pick-me-up. I didn’t use any butter for my cooking, and followed this Healthy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction to substitute pumpkin puree for butter in my cookies.

I’ve made these cookies before, and they are my favorites to make! Now, I just need to figure out how to use something different for the sugar and they will be pretty darned clean!

I also found my favorite yoga challenge and instructor, she’s Erin Motz from Do You Yoga’s 30 Day Yoga Challenge. I really dig her style because she’s laid back, and I’m pretty sure she does all the challenges from her living room. She’s really down to earth and isn’t afraid to share when she’s has any yoga mishaps.

I’ve only missed one day of yoga in the last 20 days and I like coming back every day for a new challenge. I’ve literally been trying the crow move for a few days now, and still can’t do it, even though my boyfriend could do it on his first try. Whatever…

So, I’m focusing on continuing practicing yoga and trying to fit in a night practice. When I did do night practice, I fell asleep so much easier and went to bed relaxed, not overwhelmed. I really believe that looking online right before bed can cause insomnia. Especially if you’re looking at Pinterest. Don’t look at Pinterest before bed. You will find yourself waking up at at 2am to turn your old milk container into a planter.

I digress. I’m going to continue with my yoga practice and try to stay away from fried food. Like I said before, I don’t use butter in my own cooking and baking, but I run into trouble when I get fried food while we are out. I can’t say I will stay away from fast food completely, but I can stay away from fried food.

journey to the skirt

I DID IT!!! I went an entire week without drinking any soda, gosh dang it! Yesterday, I was really put to the test when I had only two hours of sleep and woke up to zero coffee in the container. And I can’t even blame my lack of sleep on Cecilia, she slept all night. I started having charlie horses in my legs like I did during the last trimester of my pregnancy and couldn’t sleep.

I’ve heard it’s common to get them again because of all the strain you’re putting on your body from carrying your baby around all day. But it’s not like I’m going to quit carrying my baby, so I will just have to deal. I didn’t have any bananas, so I was just up watching late night TV until I fell asleep.

Back to the point. I was so very tempted to drink a soda but I instead opted for a lemonade. I know that’s not a whole lot better, but it didn’t have any high fructose corn syrup and I needed something. I had water but that wasn’t doing the trick. I needed some caffeine. Anyone who says they live completely caffeine free is awesome…and most likely not a new mom.

As for the butter, I’ve never been a huge butter fan. The only time I use butter is when I’m baking. I’ve always used olive oil when I cooked because I watched my dad do that. I honestly didn’t even know that butter was used for cooking until I moved in with my last roommates. Honest. But baking will be hard, so I’ll need to think of yummy oils to use so everyone can still enjoy all my treats! Mainly, so I can still enjoy them.

My yoga routine has turned out to be a big help. It’s kind of funny. At first, I was just doing yoga to help tone my body and started doing it every day because I told myself I would. While I love yoga, it started out as something I had to do. Then, it turned into something I needed to do. My mornings felt off without it.

I have been trying to incorporate a night routine as well, but I feel like that is more difficult. Everyone is home and we’re eating dinner and hanging out together. But I think that yoga at night might actually help stretch out my body and maybe I won’t get such bad leg pains during the night!

With that said, here are some new routines that I found. I’m also doing a yoga challenge through Do You Yoga and I’ll write about it as I’m going through it.

Lastly, I’m signing up for the Eat Clean Diet Makeover Challenge. I still need to do the measurements but I think that will give me the boost I need to get my lifestyle change going. But it could also get annoying, so we’ll see how that goes. I’m also going to write about this experience every Tuesday.

Goal: Switch soda for tea/ yoga twice a day

journey to the skirtBefore I write anything else, let me just say…weighing yourself the day after BBQ day is NOT a good idea! Ok, now we can continue…last week went pretty good, until Thursday. Why is it always on Thursday when you just lose all motivation and self-control? Maybe it was the pizza my boyfriend brought home, which led to my first soft drink of the week. Who knows.

BUT, I did do yoga every day for a week. Only 358 days of yoga left…yay! I did the same morning routine for a week and now I’m looking to add a night routine. Since I’m done with last week’s morning routine, I found a new one from an awesome site on getting fit, and it has bunnies! It can’t be that hard if bunnies can do it.

tumblr_mj4xxxABjd1rm1axqo1_1280Now, as for the night yoga, I really enjoyed doing this Relaxation Through Yoga the one time that I did it. I’m definitely going to start doing this again. It’s totally relaxing.

And now…the food. I love smoothies. I make them all the time. And I normally stick to the ingredients that I know and like, but I do always love finding new recipes. So, here’s my latest one:peanut-butter-banana-green-smoothie-recipe

I made my own today and loved it! Didn’t feel like having coffee or a big breakfast, so I ate this and it was perfect!

Goal for this week: No soda (replace with tea)/ Yoga practice in the morning

journey to the skirt

So, my soda intake went down significantly this past week. I have this insane obsession with Arnold Palmers, so I just made sure I had enough of those to last me and I did pretty good. I only had a soft drink when we went out to eat, which seems to be my biggest challenge. To make this a little more fun and interesting, I did some research and found some good iced teas to make at home. This will be a lot cheaper than stocking up on Arnold Palmers, and probably a lot better for me.

Since the weather is getting warmer, I thought everyone could benefit from a few iced tea recipes. So here they are!

Now, she uses baking soda in her recipe, which I have never heard of before. But I am down to give it a shot!

Let me just say, I love this blogger. She has been a supporter of my blog from the very beginning and I just love looking at her site. It’s so beautiful. I’m definitely going to try out this recipe, and maybe she’ll even let me write about her for Yo Momma Monday.

Now on to the exercise portion of my goal: YOGA!!! I started yoga when I took a yoga class during my first year of college (that was approximately 12 years ago) and I have practiced it on and off since then. I just love the feeling that I get from it, and I think it will help me get toned and generally help me become more fit. So, to get me back in the habit of praciticing daily, I have made it a goal to practice it once a day for this week. I’m hoping to work my way up to three times a day.

To help motivate me a little more, I’ve decided to start a “365 days of yoga” Challenge. I will take a picture of something yoga related every day and will post it on Instagram using #365daysofyoga. I’ll also post the pictures on my blog and social media sites. If you want to join me, just hashtag that and we can all see what everyone is doing. I think it will be a lot of fun and will help me to stay motivated. The challenge starts tomorrow.

Right now, I’m working on this yoga sequence and I will post a new one each Wednesday:

morning-sequenceI found this little goodie at Enjoy Life::Live Healthy

I don’t think that site is really being maintained since the last post was from last year, but the blog author got that sequence from MindBodyGreen, another site worth checking out if you’re interested in yoga.

If you want to join in the 365 days of yoga challenge, check out my Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram for more information/motivation.

If you know of any tea recipes or yoga sequences, please post them in the comments!
