Why I loved this week

Untitled-1Since writing about finding my style again a couple weeks ago, I do have to say that I have stepped out of the yoga pants and into some normal jeans more often. Maybe it’s because I got a rockin’ pair of jeans at Target for like $10 and they fit perfectly, or maybe it’s because I actually went through my closet and found clothes I will actually wear, but I am definitely feeling better about getting my style back.

So, it’s no surprise that I was excited about Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky selling stuff from her closet this week. Now, there is no way in hell I can actually fit into any of this – we just have way different body types – but it inspired me to list some of the stuff I can part with in my closet, and it inspired me to get some new threads.

Although it is the mini-skirt for sale, its the shirt that caught my eye. Both are really cute, and this is a style I could see me working with down the road. She is definitely a style inspiration and she even offers an e-course called Style Yourself, which is all about finding your style – and rocking it, of course.

I have been blessed with a really good friend who loves pickin’ and creatin’ as much as I do, but it can’t hurt to have another creative buddy! Of course I had to sign up for this Match Maker program through Oh My! Handmade. Mostly because I will pretty much sign up for anything that Jess offers, but what can I say…she offers some good stuff! Oh yeah, and this is FREE.

And of course, I had to include a recipe! I was fighting the flu last week, and even though I’m not a fan of medicine…I decided to give DayQuil a whirl. It made me numb all over and I felt like the whole world was going to crash in on me. After all that, I opted to stick with tea. Which got me thinking about my most favorite tea – Chai! I found this wonderful recipe, with a wonderful graphic to boot!

This recipe from We Made It Home is from last year, but I just landed on it this week – so it’s new to me! I also fell in love with the website when I visited it, and I have now virtually stalked her on all of the social media platforms I could. Sick or not, I cannot wait to try this recipe!

Finding my Style

Last week, it dawned on me. It was past 9 pm on any given night, and I was still in my PJ’s. No, I’m not depressed. I’m a happy stay-at-home mom who doesn’t get out and about as much I used to and sometimes I forget to change out of my PJ’s. And sometimes I shower and then put clean PJ’s back on.

And this is when it dawned on me. “Wow–I have really let go of myself,” I thought. But have I?

I’ve never been a big fan of fashion. Style, yes. Fashion, no. Only recently did I discover there was a difference. I always just wore what I thought was cool – and sometimes other people dug it, and other times, random people would say “uhhh…what’s that on your head” “It’s a head wrap, people! I just don’t know how to wear it. Dang!”

During high school, we Catholic school girls had it pretty easy in the outfit department. We wore uniforms and sometimes I would paint my shoes with nail polish and wear argyle socks to be different. I’m a real rebel. I had a small group of friends and we cared more about music than anything else in the world.

After high school, I got a job at Picture People. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a photo studio chain that specializes in babies and dogs. I worked there for four years, and by the time I left, I could categorize the customers by what time of day it was. Weekday mornings – afternoon: stay-at-home moms and dog lovers, weekday afternoons – business moms who schlepped their kids from school to the mall for their annual photos, weekends – dads.

Again, the outfit choice was easy. We had a uniform (I’m seeing a theme here) and a spinny hat. Nothing else I could wear would ever distract anyone from the spinny hat. I would snicker at all of the stay-at-home moms, swearing that would never be me. As if I was doing any better.

Then, there was College. In Humboldt. I could honestly say I don’t even remember what I wore – it was Humboldt.

Then, there was my 20s. Oh, the 20s. Where I wore patterned tights with a patterned skirt and a tiger shirt. All different patterns. Because I wanted to, dammit. I would wear fedoras with jean shorts that I cut myself and were all jagged and rough. And I didn’t care.

And now, here I am. In my jammies, looking at my chipped nails and too overwhelmed by my closet to confidentially pick out an outfit. But look where I’ve come. I shower daily, I learned to cook and clean all in a little over a year, I’m going to the College of my dreams and I have an amazing kid and boyfriend. Not too shabby. But still, I miss that fearless abandonment I had every time I went through my closet. I miss wearing something truly unique instead of the same ol thing.

Kate Payne wrote in Hip Girls Guide to Homemaking that work-at-home-ians should shower and get ready like they’re going to work every morning. Make yourself look all business-casual and you will be more productive throughout your day, she says. Well, it can’t hurt.

I’m going to make it a point to go through my closet and stick with the clothes I truly feel speak to me. The rest, I can donate to our clothing recycling program we’re doing as part of our fundraiser for Vox. Then, I’m going to make it a point to get fancy during the week. To actually put on some adult clothes and maybe even brush my hair.

Because, as I tell Sam all the time – if it’s important to you, you will make time for it.

My Healthy Life: A Journey

Well, I’m exactly one week away from two things I have been looking forward to – my birthday, and my goal date for my weight loss. They happen to fall on the same day, and that is no coincidence. I was hoping to reach 130 by my 31st birthday and kept assuring myself the whole time that I could most definitely do it. And I probably could have…if I locked myself in my room with a mini fridge filled with only the healthiest and best food, and my only activity to do during the day was to exercise.

But, let’s face it. Real life happens…and sometimes your best intentions fall short. I will say that I am proud that I have not only lost all the weight gained during my pregnancy, I am between five – ten pounds lighter than I was when I got pregnant. Sure, I still have 15 lbs to go before I reach my goal weight, but I have had the willpower to turn down fast food and soda, when both are so easy…and sometimes so good.

I have put myself on a workout regimen, and sometimes I actually stick to it. But sometimes I don’t, because I’m freaking tired after chasing around my daughter, and sometimes I count mopping my floor (so what if my mop is actually a Swiffer) and doing laundry as my workout for the day.

So, I’m going to make a proclamation for myself, and if you would like to join in, I would love your company:

  • No more following websites that have the word “Skinny” in them. I don’t want to be skinny. I just want to wear my old jeans. Not the jeans I was wearing before I got pregnant. The jeans I wore when I was at my most comfortable weight. Sure, my hips have expanded. Babies will do that to ya. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. But damn did it feel good to put on a pair of jeans I have not been able to wear in over a year.
  • While on that note, no more pinning “Skinny” recipes on Pinterest. If you haven’t heard this before, most of the skinny ingredients are worse than the real thing. Look at the ingredients and decide if you really want all of that in your body. If you do, go for it. If not, put it down. It ain’t worth it in the long run.
  • Follow bloggers and recipe developers who use real ingredients for all of their food. They don’t do a diet version, because they don’t need to. You don’t need a diet version of granola – it’s granola! A good site I just found today is A Sweet Spoonful. Her recipes have real ingredients in them, and most of them aren’t crazy. Check out these pumpkin spice muffins (you know how I feel about pumpkins). She also has a book called Whole Grain Mornings – I think the title says it all – that will be available on Dec 31. You can pre-order it now through Amazon, and it will be perfect for your New Years Resolution, if you’re about that.
  • Remain active. Even if I can’t get a workout or yoga session in, I remain active. I sit at my computer to write blog posts, and do some work. But I take a break after every project I work on to go walking with my daughter, to play with her, or to clean my house. It keeps her entertained and happy, and I stay active. We hardly ever sit down to watch TV until after dinner. Because that’s my family time, and that’s how we like to relax.

I’m still going to work on my goal, but I’m not going to hate myself if I don’t get in that 15 minute yoga session, and then 15 minutes of bodyweight workout, and then 15 minutes of yoga at night. Because sometimes I’m just tired. And I have other stuff going on. But I will (attempt to) drink all of my water, and I will cook real food for my family. Because not only do I want to look good in my jeans, I want to feel good, too.

Here is my promise to you, and this is one I can stick to. I will continue to share sites with you that I feel good about sharing. I will continue to show you new recipes that incorporate real, healthy food. I won’t ever share anything that has the word Skinny in it. Unless I have checked the ingredients and they are all real. That’s my only exception.

The Gracious PantryIf you have read my blog just once in your life, you probably know how deep my love for this site runs. Tiffany not only shares a whole bunch of clean eating (the elimination of processed foods in your diet) recipes, she also advises on healthy food substitution, like the sugar substitution chart, and she loves pumpkin, too. My kind of girl.

Healthy Aperture – Healthy food photo sharing site. A good way to find recipes that you will love and continue to use, and you can also find new healthy bloggers to follow. If you find yourself liking a bunch of recipes from one poster, maybe you should check out their site and see what else they have. There’s also a blog with healthy tips and recipes.

Attune Foods Blog – This is a new one that I found today, through Sweet Spoonful. It’s a healthy recipe sharing site, and you can also join the FitClean community, which focuses on incorporating both fitness and clean eating in your daily life.

Well, hello pre-pregnancy jeans

Current weight: 154/ goal weight: 130

After I weighed myself on Sunday (with a teething baby, it has been a little hard to blog as often) I was thinking about how much I weighed before I got pregnant and was reminded that I was heftier then than I am now. Although I did walk and bike everywhere, it was normally to the bar and all that beer and fried food consumption can really get to you!

Not going to lie, I do allow myself some cheat days but I wait to do so after I have accomplished something…so it really feels like an award. And this accomplishment sure did deserve a reward!

I’m not saying they fit perfectly and that I didn’t have a little muffin top stickin out, but by golly gosh, they zipped and buttoned and I could move without fear of the button popping! I have been a lot more active with trying to keep this house cleaned and organized and with my renewed love for gardening.

The only thing I have trouble sticking to is working out. By the time I get the babe calmed down in the morning, it’s already 10 am and it’s time to start cleaning and get the day going. Then I tell myself I’ll start working out when Sam comes home, but then we’re eating dinner and I’m usually doing homework and finishing anything I couldn’t get done during the day.

So, when do I work out?

I’m not even going to try doing my workout videos for a while. I think all of my exercises will involve my baby, which is a cool experience that I can tell her all about when she asks what we did ALL day together.

So, my next challenge: to hit 150 by the 15th of this month, 140 by the 14th of april and finally, to hit 130 by the 15th of may.
