Fridays are for Favorites

fridays are for favorites

A couple weeks ago, I decided to switch up my Fridays are for Favorites post, and I wrote about my favorite things that happened that week. I enjoyed writing that post so much, that I decided to write my future Friday posts like that! I will be listing my favorite things that happened, or that I discovered, through the week and sharing them with you! This could be a new Etsy store I found, an awesome new tutorial I landed on, a delicious recipe I found…anything! So, let the fun begin!

Beginner Photoshop Tutorial from Tuts Plus – Grant Fieldman wrote a 19-part tutorial on learning Photoshop for Tuts Plus, He included videos and links to even more tutorials! If you have not gotten yourself acquainted with this website yet, it’s about high time that you do. I just saw that they have a tutorial on paper crafting too. Awesome!

Encourage Beauty Challenge from In Honor of Design – Hilary Rushford from Dean Street Society and Anna at In Honor of Design have joined forces for an amazing Instagram challenge that is all about encouraging beauty. I was unfamiliar with both sites until I saw someone else share this Challenge on Twitter. Another nod to the power of sharing through social media. The Challenge and details are on either site but I encourage you to check them both out, if you haven’t already.

And to top it off, she also has a 20% off sale at her store through Nov 4! Click on the link or the photo to find the Giveaway, and then just follow the instructions to enter! And my absolute favorite thing about this week….

IMG_0700

Dressing my daughter up like a housewife, of course! The costume did not turn out the way I wanted it to, of course. But it was still awesome and we had quite the photo shoot! This was my favorite picture because it describes us to a tee. I was supposed to be a hipster housewife (I know, I really had to reach far for that one…) but you can’t really see my outfit so I just look like a hobo – which isn’t too far off from my normal look. And I think I love that scarf. It was buried deep with all my other scarves but I think that will be a staple.

What are your favorite things from this week? Share them in the comments and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #fridayfavorites You can find more Friday inspiration on my Pinterest!

Fridays are for Favorites

fridays are for favorites

This week has been very special. Instead of spending hours scouring Pinterest and Etsy for something lovely to write about, I found it all in my very own life. Not that I mind my creepily close relationship with both websites, it is kind of an amazing feeling to not have to search very far, or very long, for inspiration. Here are some of my favorite things that has happened in the last week or so.

Cards! From CocoPress – I entered Emmaline’s Instagram giveaway, and I won this pack of cards! They are so super cute that I don’t really want to send them anywhere, but that would be just plain greedy. I’ve actually read about crafty pen pals, so if I get into something like that, these would be perfect! I will post Emmaline’s story on my Meet the Maker series soon, so stay tuned to read more about this wonderful printmaker!

Why I Buy Handmade from The Petit Cadeau – Allison wrote about why she buys handmade and the slow gifting movement on her blog. “It’s about making a conscious choice for gifts. It’s about making gifts with love or purchasing something made with care by hand. It’s an energy” You can read more buy clicking on the link or image above. You can also join the movement with @thepetitcadeau on Twitter, just use the hashtag #whatimgifting. I’m also writing about the lovely Allison for my “Yo Momma Monday” series and you will get to read her story soon!

Knitting contest from Interweave – I have actually formed a good relationship with Tiffany from Interweave through this blog, and she let me know about this contest! Interweave is offering a prize package to knitters who share the story behind their first knitting projects. I remember my first knitting project – I was trying to make one of those rasta beanies, and it got super stretched out so now it’s pretty ridiculous. I still have the beanie! I will share my story in the contest and will also share it on my blog. It’s going on now through Nov 8th. If you win, you get to choose up to 5 items for your prize package. Score!

The Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap – This is the first time I’ve heard of such a thing, and let me tell you – it sounds awesome! The cookie swap is hosted by Love & Olive Oil and The Little Kitchen, both blogs that I love. Participants must have a blog that is at least two months old and must have at least two food-related posts in the last two months. There is a $4 entry fee, which goes directly to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, and the deadline to enter is Nov. 4th.

I have been taking little steps to integrating food more into my blog, and this is just more motivation to keep me going that route. And I get to try cookies from other food bloggers? Done.

Weekly Wishes on the Nectar Collective – And last but definitely not least, I found this little goodie when I was doing some research on another wonderful person I am writing about, Lix Hewett. Melyssa, who runs the Nectar Collective and Weekly Wishes, posts her goals and/or challenges for the week every Monday. She then invites others to join her through a linkup.  I do this on my own every week in my journal, but it sure would be nice to share and get inspired by others.

I have found that the more I involve myself with others in the crafting community, the easier inspiration comes to me. If you see anything here that speaks to you, share your thoughts in the comments below. You can connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest for more of this goodness. Have anything you want to share? Simply use the hashtag #fridayfavorites or tag me in the post! Happy Friday to all!

Thrifty Thursdays

thrifty thursdays

There is nothing more thrifty than free, right? There are Giveaways popping up everywhere…Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest…all my stomping grounds! I used to be really hesitant about entering Giveaways, because there was always a catch to them, and I would always end up getting random calls about free trips to Mexico. However, the world of blogging and social media has changed the game of Giveaways, and now they’re pretty awesome to enter. Here are a few good ones I found (including a Mod Podge one – yes!)

Mod Podge Giveaway from burlap and blue – Linda from burlap and blue has teamed up with Amy Anderson from Mod Podge Rocks to offer this awesome giveaway! I started using Mod Podge a little while ago, and I have never looked back. This Giveafway includes the book Mod Podge Rocks, Linda’s favorite formula and a sample pack. I bought an even smaller sample pack a few months ago, and all of it is gone already. Oops. So, if you love Mod Podge as much as I do, you have four more days to enter!

Image belongs to Blue Skies Shop

Free Dress Giveaway from Potholes & Pantyhose – Rebekah from Potholes & Panythose has hooked up with Blue Skies Shop to offer this awesome dress giveaway. This was my favorite dress from their collection, and it’s $48 – not too shabby! I agree with Rebekah that it’s really hard to find a dress that fits right. I usually go with skirts and tops since I’m my top half is a lot smaller than my bottom. I’ve used her website before for tutorials and crafting, so even if you’re not into this giveaway, you should check her out. BUT if you are into the Giveaway…then go enter. You only have 3 days left.

Instagram Giveaways (These Giveaways are only on Instagram. Trust me, I checked. If you do have Instagram, follow all of these shops. They’re totally worth it. Then enter the Giveaway. If you’re not on Instagram, I would strongly urge you to give it a shot).

Fall Woodland GiveawayI found this giveaway on the profile of @lovedbyhannahandeli on my Instagram. It features a whole bunch of awesome shops – Slyfox Threads, potluck store,  little big fabric, Sugarplum Lane Baby Boutique, Paper and Pleats and lovedbyhannahandeli, all run by awesome people. I checked out (and followed, of course) everyone on this Giveaway, and seriously…who needs to go to the store when you have all of this? From what I can tell, the majority (if not all) of these designers are moms who own their own businesses. You all know how much I love that.

Hand-printed Card Giveaway from CocoPress – CocoPress is offering a set of letterpress cards in this awesome giveaway. You can also check out her awesome Etsy shop for more beautiful stationary. Everything is hand-printed and made in her home studio. The Giveaway is over tomorrow, so if you have Instagram, hurry over!

Every Giveaway, tutorial and recipe I share with you is approved by me. I don’t share anything that I wouldn’t enter or use myself. I will never promote a Giveaway that requires you to do anything out of the ordinary, like cut off your right arm. Nothing is worth your right arm…except your right arm. I am not compensated for any of this. I just love to share awesome stuff that I find. If you are running a Giveaway, please feel free to share in the comments and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #staythrifty. Follow me on Pinterest for more Thrifty Thursday inspiration. And, as always, stay thrifty my friends.

Giveaway Winner Announced and more!

Giveaway WinnerA winner has been chosen from our Giveaway: Catalina Torre! The Giveaway was created through Rafflecopter, and the winner was chosen at random. I had a lot of fun doing this Giveaway and I loved working with Lilia Vanini! The scarfs were so beautiful that I wanted to enter the Giveaway myself but I knew that would probably be frowned upon, so I will just have to wait until I can purchase one!

If you are planning on hosting a Giveaway, I would definitely suggest going through Rafflecopter. I did opt for the Blogger membership, which is $8 a month, but I feel like it was worth it if you are planning on hosting several giveaways. They made it super easy for me to start it, and updated me when it was almost over, and again when it was over. Unfortunately, I couldn’t embed the giveaway on my blog, but there was a Facebook app which made it easy.

book writingAnd I have some exciting news to share…I am writing my very first book! It’s in the super-beginning stages right now. It will focus on people who have successfully started their own businesses after losing their jobs. So, if you have started your own business after losing your job (laid off or fired), and you want to share your story, I would love to write about it!

I would interview you and any family members or friends that could help add your story and I would either meet you to take a few pictures of you (if you live in the area), or you could simply send some photos that best describe your life and business to me. I haven’t decided if I am going to take it to a publisher, or if I will publish it myself, but all of the writing and design will be done by me.

Writing was my first love, and it will always be my biggest passion. This book will be an exploration into the lives of people who have made something wonderful out of a negative experience. I have started a few projects since I lost my job, but I have yet to find much success from them, so it will be so amazing to hear all of these stories. I will be posting updates, profiles, photos and more during this book writing journey.

Please let me know if you would like to share your story. You can either post a comment, write me an e-mail or connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. If you would like to host a giveaway with me, collaboration and sponsorship opportunities are available. I do all the work, you just let me know what product you want to share!

Thank you for hanging with me on this crazy and wild, yet totally amazing, journey.

Scarf Giveaway!

Lilia Vanini Giveaway

Lilia Vanini is the owner and operator of Lilia Vanini Boutique on Etsy, where she sells beautiful handmade scarves, handbags and headwraps. She learned to sew from her grandma, who was a seamstress for a fashion boutique in her town.

During a vacation to Venice, Italy, she was reintroduced to her first passion, sewing. She eventually moved there after 10 years of dreaming about it, and immersed herself in the handmade world again. Now, she works in her studio, creating a variety of beautiful handmade items – handbags, scarves, headwraps, legwarmers, bootsocks and jewelry.

Today, she is offering a free handmade scarf of the winner’s choice. There are over 50 scarves to choose from, and each of them are worth over $25. Perfect for the fall! Since I am unable to embed the giveaway on this site, the link below will take you directly to the Giveaway page. You can also enter on my Facebook! The giveaway will be going on for a week, and we will let the winner know 48 hours after the giveaway ends.

You can find out more about Lilia Vanini by visiting her Etsy shop and connecting with her on Facebook. If you would like to offer a giveaway of your product, please let me know in the comments!

Good luck!
