With a couple birthdays in one week, it has been a little challenging staying on track with my healthy plan. But, I told myself a long time ago that I would not force myself to be perfect 100% of the time. Sometimes your family will have Mexican food multiple times in one week, and heck…you might feel rebellious and go for the beans and Spanish rice. As long as it doesn’t become a normal thing, and you stay active…you will be just fine. This is preparation for Thanksgiving, anyway. That said, between chasing after my baby and going on weekly walks with my friend, I haven’t seen an increase in my weight. Hooray for that!

Since this is the perfect weather for some soup, I thought I would share a couple healthy soup recipes that I got from Greatist the other day. I love soup so much, and it’s an easy way to stay healthy. The only issue can be making sure you get enough flavor. I’m pretty stoked to give these recipes a try.

Hearty Chicken Stew with Butternut Squash and Quinoa from Cookin Canuck – I’m literally staring at my butternut squash that I haven’t had a chance to do anything with, so this would be the perfect recipe for that. I also have some quinoa that I am always trying to hide in our meals, so it’s a double bonus! I have shared a recipe from Cookin Canuck before, so obviously I’m already a fan.

Vegetarian Lentil Taco Soup from Relishing It – I must admit, after being a vegetarian for several years (I had to stop when I got pregnant due to some issues I had and now cooking for two meat lovers, I’m vegetarian for 2/3 meals), it can be hard to get flavor out of vegetarian soups. But this taco soup looks delicious, and I think the boys might even eat it, too. Once I saw the jalapenos and cilantro, I knew I would be good. Laurie, who runs Relishing It, is a mama of two, a foodie and an organic cook. She has a lot of good recipes on her blog!

On any given day, my daughter interrupts me nine out of the ten times I’m on the computer. Usually it’s so she can look at the screen or play with all of the buttons on the computer. Sometimes it’s because she want’s her momma, and that’s a good sign for me to put everything aside and just hang with my daughter. Lately, I’ve been waking up with my boyfriend so I can get a good couple hours of work in before she wakes.

Well, today she woke up before her normal time, and the interruption came in handy. I was well on my way to writing a really boring post and she must have somehow felt that was happening because she sprung out of her sleep and climbed on my lap (I should also note that she has become more accustomed to sleeping on the couch than in her crib right now. I know. We’re working on it).

Now that I have had some time away from the computer, I’m back and ready to write a super non-boring post (I hope!). I do have some exciting news to share: I’m officially an ambassador for the MyYogaPro Kickstarter campaign on DoYouYoga! I have been really falling behind on my yoga practice, so that is just the push I need to get back on track! I also decided I would make my own pumpkin spice creamer today. This is really only because we don’t have any creamer left and a girl can use almond milk as creamer for only so long! I happened to find a recipe for both pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin creamer on my go-to clean eating site, The Gracious Pantry.

The creamer is chillin’ in the fridge (literally) overnight, so I will write a full review when I’m done to let you know how it turns out! The last couple times I have tried the recipe have been failures, so I’m hoping for a win on this one.

I also tried on a few pairs of my old pants (mostly because my one pair I wear now was in the laundry) and to my surprise – they fit! I will also write a post on that for next week, and will show off the new/old duds! It’s definitely motivation to keep doing what I’m doing…and it’s super thrifty because I don’t need to buy new clothes! I already have them, hidden in that magical forest I like to call under-bed storage.

Gettin fit: Old clothes challenge

Do you have a rice cooker? I do. I attempted cooking rice several times before purchasing said rice cooker, and let’s just say it never worked out. On one occasion, I was so afraid to burn the rice that I barely cooked it…and my friend seriously had to ask what exactly I was attempting. Is it rice soup? Were you going for hard rice? The next time, I was a little more relaxed about cooking the rice, and it ended up burnt. Since rice is a staple in my house, I decided it was time to purchase a rice cooker. And since I’m also a fan of multi-purpose appliances, I was happy to find this article by Emily Ho for the Kitchn. (Side note, you should totally check out Emily Ho’s website. She’s awesome).

Turns out, you can make steel cut oats, polenta, beans and frittata in the rice cooker! You can click on the photo or on the link above to get directions for making all of this. While we are on the topic of making wonderful food, here’s an awesome recipe for steel cut oats! They’re super good for you, and perfect for the colder weather.

Clean Eating Pumpkin Oatmeal – If you have ever visited my blog before, you know how deep my obsession with pumpkin runs. I’m also slightly obsessed (ok, maybe a little bit more than slightly) obsessed with The Gracious Pantry. This looks like a wonderful recipe that I have yet to try. It’s something you could also make on a Sunday and finish throughout the week…which is the easiest and best way for me to eat breakfast.

I WAS ABLE TO DO YOGA THIS MORNING! My baby girl has not been sleeping well lately, but she actually slept in her own crib all night long, and slept long enough for me to squeeze in a quick practice this morning! It felt so good and I feel so rejuvenated now. I can seriously take on the world. So, watch out, world.

I also got back into my routine with the Beginner Bodyweight Workout Plan from GB Personal Training. I’m doing Week 1 over again, since I got a little off path last week. I have decided to stick with low-impact workouts and yoga for my fitness needs. I’m more likely to stay on track and it’s kind of hard to carry and play with a baby when your legs feel like jelly and you can barely move. Sure, it’s a sign of a good workout, but it’s kind of pointless if I can’t do anything after.

Whatever exercise you choose, it does your body good. Check out this article from Greatist to find more unexpected benefits of exercise. Every time I read an article like that, I get more motivated and inspired to continue working out every day. Fitting into my old clothes ain’t too shabby, either 🙂

Gettin fit: Old Clothes Challenge

Goals: Reach 130 by Nov 12 | Workout 30 min per day | Eat clean, whole foods

Yesterday marked the end of the Real Food Challenge. I didn’t stick to it every day, due to a serious lack of the necessary ingredients. So, I’m going to go through all of the recipes today and make a grocery list. Since we don’t go grocery shopping often, I think it would be best to make a big haul once a month and just get little stuff when we need it. I’m going to use this list and the list from The Gracious Pantry and combine the two. I don’t want to bore everyone with my grocery list, but if you would like to see it for some inspiration, please let me know and I will be happy to share!

I’m sticking to my 30 minute exercise plan. I get plenty of it chasing around the baby, but she’s getting to the point where she would rather just crawl around and do her own thing then hang with her boring ol mom while I work out. While I was on the lookout for an easy 30 minute exercise I can do, I found this:

Beginner Bodyweight Monthly Workout Plan from GB Personal Training – RAD! Founder Greg Brookes says that this workout is for total beginners, or people who have been out of it for a while (for some reason, I feel like I fit both). And he says that no workout should take longer than 30 minutes! I can get down with that!

Gettin fit: Old Clothes Challenge

Current weight: 143 | Fitness goal: Yoga and workout every day | Food goal: Eat as clean as possible

A couple weeks ago, I decided to stop the 365 Days of Yoga Challenge on Instagram. I still practice yoga and I try to fit it in every day, but sometimes, it just doesn’t happen. One day I was practicing, and I realized mid-practice that I forgot to bring my phone in to snap a picture for the Challenge. When I got back into the practice, I didn’t feel the same. I was too busy worrying about getting a good shot. And do you know how many truly good poses you can capture when you are the one doing the poses, and taking the photos? About two.

Cecilia is also getting a whole lot more active and just wants to walk around all day. Since she can’t walk by herself yet, she depends on me to hold her hands while she cruises the house. When I’m not busy playing with her, I’m cleaning the house, taking online design classes and turning my love for writing into a career. So, if I happen to miss a workout, it’s not the end of the world for me anymore. She gives me plenty of a workout, anyway!

Now that the weather has cooled down a little, I’m going to take her on walks a lot more, since that not only helps me get in shape, it’s good bonding time with her and it helps me relax and take everything in. Since I’m not working out as much as I was, I need to stay focused on eating better. Since joining the Real Food Challenge with Eat Hugger and Erin Motz, I’ve tried a few new recipes.

Yesterday I tried the Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese but used pumpkin instead, since that’s what I had, and it’s what I love the most. It was so delicious, no joke. I use lunch time as my time to experience with different food since my family isn’t all into that. So, I made some yesterday and I’ll eat it every day for lunch until it’s gone. Since becoming a mom, I’ve learned to enjoy the same food for several days in a row.

I know that I probably could squeeze at least 30 minutes of working out and stretching into my day every day. I think I’m going to work on doing yoga in the morning or at night, and then a walk with the baby. If I can get more in, that would be awesome…but every day is a new day! As long as I keep the house clean, get my homework done, and most of all, keep my baby happy, then life is good.

Gettin fit: Old clothes challenge

Goals: 30 min of yoga/ 30 min workout daily | Eat 2-3 clean meals daily

Well, this past week I have a slipped a little, but I’m getting back to my routine. I decided to stop posting my “365 days of yoga” challenge pictures on Instagram. I found that I was so worried about getting a shot of the pose I was on that I wasn’t fully into my routine. Today was my first practice without taking any photos, and I felt like I got a lot more out of it.

So, I have 12 weeks left of my old clothes challenge and I have about 18 lbs I would love to shed. That’s a little over a lb a week and I do believe that I can do it. I just need to stick to my goals. For those of you who want to eat a little better and workout a little more, here is some inspiration:

I’m going to attempt this Italian Quinoa tonight for dinner. I got the recipe from the 30 Day Real Food Challenge with Eat Hugger and my girl Erin Motz. The challenge is definitely a good way to get into eating real food and there are some pretty good recipes in there.

I have been religiously following Fitness Blender for all of my workouts thus far, but I dig this 30 minute Bodyweight Workout from Greatist. While I think I get more from following the videos since I get to see exactly how you are supposed to do each pose, I do love listening to my tunes while I workout, so these are great. Also, I can print this out and take it outside if I want to take my workout outside.

So, I’m interested to see how my family will react to the quinoa tonight. I almost want to keep my camera out to capture the excitement.

Gettin fit: Old clothes challenge

After my week-long break from working out (our whole house was sick…it sucked), I’m trying to get back into my routine. My baby was so used to cuddling with me all day long for a week straight, she’s also having a hard time of getting back into the routine of hanging with herself while I try to get some stuff done around here. So, I’ve gotten back into working out with my baby.

I’m still doing the 365 Days of Yoga Challenge and the poses are turning more into a flow, rather than just going from pose to pose. It’s just hard to get in my night yoga, so I need to set aside some time for it. Here is my new fitness routine:

Monday: Baby workout

Tuesday: Resistance band

Wednesday: Kettle bell

Thursday: Wii Fit

Friday: Bodyweight

These mom and baby exercises from The Daily Green are still my favorite mom and baby exercises. Cecilia absolutely loves when I do the Shoulder Press, Glute Lifts and Leg Lifts, which makes it fun to watch her get all excited. Now that she’s a lot more active, she has a harder time just sitting with me, so when I involve her in this stuff, she loves it.

I also started the Real Food Challenge, with my favorite yoga instructor, Erin Motz, through Eat Hugger. Since I’ve been following the Clean Eating lifestyle for a while now, this doesn’t look too hard. This is also a good site in general for finding recipes with whole foods in them. My only problem is getting the food for it. I’ll be in Sacramento this weekend so I’m hoping to hit up the farmers markets while I’m there.

They are also open to contributors who want to write articles about healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. So if this is something you are into and you love to write, you should consider checking them out. I don’t think they pay but it’s a good outlet, and a good way to get more traffic to your personal blog.

I have been able to fit into some of my old clothes that weren’t so attractive when I tried to put them on a month ago, so that makes me feel good! I’m waiting until I hit 140 before I do my first closet purge. Only 6 lbs left to go before I do that! I’m feeling a lot better (not so sluggish) and I feel a lot healthier than I did just a little while ago. I’m loving all of these changes!
