My Healthy Life: A Journey

my healthy lifeMy efforts in maintaining a healthy life have been very lackluster lately, to say the least. It’s a lot harder than I thought to take care of a home, a cute little baby (although at 15 months, she’s a big ol baby now), keep up decent grades and start a business. Squeezing in a workout AND not over-snacking when I’m stressed? Uh…yeah right.

So, in an effort to get back in a routine and not just completely lose it, I’ve decided to slowly add little things I could do that wouldn’t be hard to maintain and would be totally beneficial to me feeling and looking good. Because it’s not all about looking good for me. I need energy to get through my day and all that pizza – though wonderful and delicious – is slowin’ me down!

Last week, I decided to start way back from the beginning and follow the Clean Eating plan on the Gracious Pantry. I picked one thing to abstain from and so far, so good. This round: no fast food. I know, I know. I’ve done it before, but like I said…I’m starting fresh. From the beginning. I started last Wednesday, so it will be two weeks next Wednesday and then I will pick another thing to abstain from.

Like I have noted before, it’s all about convenience. If I have good healthy food to eat at home, then I’ll eat that. I only succumb to the pleasures of fast food if we have nothing to eat or I don’t feel like cooking. The only issue I ran into is that I made that goal a while ago to make all my food from scratch. Which means that if I want to just whip up something quick, that probably ain’t happening.

I have read before that if you work from home, you should treat it like you are going outside of the home to work. So, that means: showering, making your own lunch and mentally preparing yourself to work. Showering sometimes happens and sometimes doesn’t but I do like the idea of making my lunch ahead of time so I don’t have to worry about it when I’m in the middle of my workday.

I also found a new site called The Sweaty Betties. It’s run by fitness expert Danny J and the Facebook page describes the group as “irreverent group of women who are looking to get fit & have a whole lot of fun along the way.” There is a free 12-week lifting program that you can download on the website. It’s mainly geared toward the gym so I think I will have to wait on this until I get back into the gym, but it’s worth checking out!

And…look at these pancakes! I have really turned into a breakfast person now that I work from home because it fuels me and gives me time to sit and think about what I need to get done, and watch my daughter play and run around the house. Because that’s my favorite. These whole wheat pancakes from How Sweet Eats look delicious and they’re healthy to boot! I think I will need to give these a try really soon. Like tomorrow soon. I’m not a fan of greek yogurt but I’m sure regular yogurt would be just fine.

Why I loved this week

Untitled-1Since writing about finding my style again a couple weeks ago, I do have to say that I have stepped out of the yoga pants and into some normal jeans more often. Maybe it’s because I got a rockin’ pair of jeans at Target for like $10 and they fit perfectly, or maybe it’s because I actually went through my closet and found clothes I will actually wear, but I am definitely feeling better about getting my style back.

So, it’s no surprise that I was excited about Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky selling stuff from her closet this week. Now, there is no way in hell I can actually fit into any of this – we just have way different body types – but it inspired me to list some of the stuff I can part with in my closet, and it inspired me to get some new threads.

Although it is the mini-skirt for sale, its the shirt that caught my eye. Both are really cute, and this is a style I could see me working with down the road. She is definitely a style inspiration and she even offers an e-course called Style Yourself, which is all about finding your style – and rocking it, of course.

I have been blessed with a really good friend who loves pickin’ and creatin’ as much as I do, but it can’t hurt to have another creative buddy! Of course I had to sign up for this Match Maker program through Oh My! Handmade. Mostly because I will pretty much sign up for anything that Jess offers, but what can I say…she offers some good stuff! Oh yeah, and this is FREE.

And of course, I had to include a recipe! I was fighting the flu last week, and even though I’m not a fan of medicine…I decided to give DayQuil a whirl. It made me numb all over and I felt like the whole world was going to crash in on me. After all that, I opted to stick with tea. Which got me thinking about my most favorite tea – Chai! I found this wonderful recipe, with a wonderful graphic to boot!

I love getting a new calendar and/or planner! While I have plenty of devices that are more than capable to track all of my important dates and ideas, I am not yet trained in relying completely on my phone. I just have this crazy concept that I am able to think better when I am writing on something in front of me rather than on my phone. And I like to make little notes and goals…so it just works better that way.

It never really occurred to me that I could create my own calendars until recently, and now I have found plenty of awesome calendars that you can create and personalize yourself! I am most definitely going to work on a calendar and can’t wait to share mine with you! Here are some ideas to get your creative juices going:

This calendar from Our Collective is simple and classic, and you can use your own photos for the graphics. You can get the calendar template by clicking on the photo or the link above and clicking on the “free calendar” tab. Once downloaded, you will receive 12 .psd templates (one for each month) and instructions. They also share an awesome idea for reusing your CD cases to hold the calendars!

Now, in order to complete this project, you will need to purchase the 2014 Stitch the Stars calendar set from Heather Lins for $25. So, it’s not free, but it’s worth the same amount of money that you would spend on any other calendar. And this one allows you to use a little creativity! Download and print out this FREE 2014 calendar on The Elli Blog. I love this calendar because it’s simple and also has enough space to write down important dates and put your notes on the other side. She says to print on white cardstock, but hey…I say get crazy and print it on any card stock you want! Lots of good DIY projects and tutorials on this site!

I absolutely love this calendar from Eat Drink Chic! It’s fun and colorful, the only downside is that it really makes want some chocolate the moment I look at it! I would love to print this out and put it in the kitchen – which I think I just might do! You can circle or put little markers by the important dates, and I already know a couple people who would love to get this as a little gift!

Thrifty Thursdays: Holiday edition

With Christmas a little less than three weeks away, I thought I would share some thrifty ways to gift for the holidays. There are a few gifts I’m making at home (some of which I can’t share in case the recipient is reading), and I wanted to help you also maintain your budget while creating thoughtful gifts this year.

For one, I will be utilizing my brand spankin new pressure canner this year, and already have requests for some apple butter. I was thinking of also adding pumpkin butter to the mix (because, why not) and some hot sauce. Here are some of my favorite recipes:

Homemade Apple Butter from My Baking Addiction – I made this recipe a little over a month ago, and it was a huge hit. So huge, that everyone is asking for some for Christmas. I also used it to make apple oatmeal cookies and you can read my recipe on Today’s Mama here. Need some labels? I found cute, free holiday printables at Over the Big Moon and the From Scratch Club.

Pumpkin Butter Recipe with Free Printable from See Kate Sew – Now, I haven’t tried this one, so I can’t vouch for how wonderful it is – but I’m sure it will knock my socks off. Not everyone in my family loves pumpkin like I do; some just downright despise it (you know who you are), but for the ones that do – this will be the perfect gift!

I would highly recommend using a pressure canner if you are going to give out any canned goods, just to be on the safe side. If you don’t have a canner, make sure to write that their goods should only last about a week or so in the fridge, so they will want to eat them quickly (which I’m sure they will have no problem doing).

Now maybe you have some mason jars lying around (or you know you can get them for cheap at The Dollar Store, secondhand stores and even Michael’s), but you don’t feel like canning anything. You can also create cute cookie mix jars by just adding the dry ingredients and writing the full recipe on a cute piece of paper. You can also step up your game and write the recipe on a ceramic cookie jar in permanent marker, then bake it.

Handmade Holidays: Cookie Mix from Domestikated Life – Kate grabbed a recipe off a bag of Tollhouse Chocolate Chips, added the dry ingredients to a jar, wrote out the recipe and prettied it up with some Martha Stewart labels she got. You can use also use any of the labels I linked to above, as well. You can also choose any cookie recipe you want, just make sure you don’t add any liquid ingredients, as that would sort of be a disaster.

Hip Girls Guide to Homemaking from Kate Payne – I got a couple Amazon gift cards for my birthday on Tuesday, so I was finally able to buy this book that I have been wanting to get! It’s $17.98 at Amazon and is full of information that any “half-assed domestic goddess” should know. She talks about decorating on a budget, canning, preserving, thrifting and more. I think she also shares a few recipes, which I’m stoked about! I think she’s working on a new book too….

Plate to Pixel from Helene Dujardin – This is another Amazon purchase that I got because it gives tips on food photography and styling. This is something I have really wanted to get into more, but have had some difficulty with. She also runs a food blog called Tartelette – where she shares recipes, workshops and more. Originally from France, Helene is now living in Alabama and she started her blog in 2006, after leaving a pastry chef position at a French restaurant.

11 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started My Business from Stephanie St. Claire on Medium – Since starting my own business, I have read a lot of articles on what you need to know to run a successful business. Few of them touch on how hard, tiring and lonely it will be, though. That’s what I liked about this article – it’s real, and she quotes Snoop Dogg. A super funny intuitive guidance counselor, she blogs at Blissbombed and offers custom guidance sessions.

I had been hinting at a pressure canner for SO long and my boyfriend got it for me for my birthday! I am so excited, and now I can really get going with my canning. Christmas presents, anyone? My beautiful daughter is embracing her inner Vanna White and is displaying it for us. Truthfully, she was pushing it around the house and I caught her mid-pause. What a useful gift!

Thrifty Thursdays: Tutorial time!

I love thrifting. I love the thrill of finding stuff that you just can’t get anymore, and most of all – I love finding them at good prices. I love going to swap meets, street fairs, antique fairs and craft fairs because I love meeting people who collect and create these awesome, unique items, and I love hearing the stories behind their work.

But what I love more than anything is taking something old and giving it a whole new life.  It expands your mind, makes you look at each and item you see differently and it gives a whole new meaning to thrifting. Recently, I got addicted to finding old cheese graters, prettying them up and turning them into earring holders. Now, I don’t normally wear earrings, so for me they work great as gifts.

Recently, I worked with Bev Feldman – an awesome mama to be who I met on Oh My Handmade – on a tutorial for my cheese grater upcycle and she shared it on her Linkouture blog yesterday! It was my first time ever creating a tutorial, so it was a fun learning experience and I am so thrilled that she posted it on her site!

My Healthy Life: A Journey

my healthy lifeSo, today is my birthday! Hooray! It’s also my goal date for my weight loss, and I’m about 14 lbs from it. Obviously, I’m not going to lose 14.5 lbs today, but that does not mean that I’m not proud of what I have done. Although I have cheat days, I focus on eating whole, clean food that makes me feel good when I eat it. I have started a yoga routine, and sometimes I’m even able to fit in a work out.

I’m able to wear some of my old clothes, and I was able to store some clothes that were just too big, and that feels so good. Sometimes when I’m showing Cecilia herself in the mirror, I catch a glimpse of myself and I’m comfortable with what I see. So even though the scale may not be showing the results I was hoping for, I can already see the improvement in my confidence and personality.

And it’s not just the weight loss. I feel a lot healthier than I did before. I can chase my daughter all over the backyard and not feel winded. I have learned how to bake and cook because of this journey, and I have saved my family a lot of money because we don’t go out to eat all the time like we used to. I have done it all just by eating better and working out. I did not take a magic pill, or limit myself to shakes. No crazy diets…just eating better and remaining active.

Wanting to step up my game a little, I decided to take a Core Strength Yoga Class from Sadie Nardini. Let’s just say that it was a 30 minute class, and I lasted 15 minutes. I was happy to hear my daughter cry when she woke up, so I could pretend that’s why I had to stop. If you want a yoga class to make you cry, check her out. I’m pretty sure I threw my back out, but I’m going to try it again this weekend to see how far I can get without injuring myself.

Yesterday, I wanted to find a low-impact workout since I was still feeling messed up from that yoga class and walking over 2 miles to find the Sacramento Antique Fair (one could say I really love antiques), so I found a good pilates class…and I think I’m in love. The class was a 15 minute beginner class so it was perfect for me, and it’s through Pilatesology. You can sign up for $19 a month and can opt for a 10 day free trial if you want to test drive before you buy.

I also made this pumpkin turkey chilli from The Gracious Pantry, but used potatoes instead of turkey. I added a couple cups of water to help soften the potatoes, but that is really up to you. I absolutely loved the way it turned out. My soups usually lack flavor, but not this one. The coconut milk was perfect for this recipe, and added a lot of spice and flavor. Next, I’m going to make it hotter by adding some chili peppers.
