Thrifty Thursdays

Today I woke up and realized that I did not write all week. I knew something felt a little funny. It’s a continuous process to get in a routine, and I’m trying again to write at least once a day. So, I’m starting fresh and sharing some cool things I found just surfing my Facebook news feed. All the times I’ve threatened canceling my account, I continue to keep it open because with every negative post I see, there is an explosion of inspiration. I’ve learned to just stay on my page and visit the pages I like than to get caught up in the drama of Facebook. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So, today’s Thrifty Thursday post is a little mix of craft, food and skincare. There’s something for everyone!

First, can we all agree that this Macrame Plant Hanger from The Paper Mama is equally as cute as the planter? It only cost Chelsey $5 to make the plant hanger, and she shared her whole tutorial on Better Homes & Gardens. You can also find a tutorial for her planter in her e-book, which I purchased last year, and am totally in love with.

I love when Greatist posts stuff like 400+ Cheap and Healthy Recipes, because it challenges the preconception that eating healthy has to be expensive. As long as you have some fruit, veggies, protein and grain…you can make some pretty healthy stuff. They have it broken down it the basic categories – breakfast, lunch, dinner, soup and more. I’ve been getting pretty bored of my normal everyday eats, so I love finding new recipes to test.

I always save tutorials and recipes for sugar/salt scrubs, but I have yet to actually make one. What’s up with that? So I’m saving this DIY Citrus Salt Scrub recipe from Offbeat + Inspired in hopes that I’ll actually use it. I got some essential oils for the candle kit that I was obsessed with getting but still haven’t made anything. With it already feeling like the middle of summer outside and spending my days watching my daughter float around in our inflatable pool, my skin has been angry with me. So this might just give it the love it needs.

And what is more perfect in the summer heat than ice cream?! Especially this Dark Chocolate Strawberry Ice Cream recipe from Love & Olive Oil. You will need an ice cream maker to make this, so if you have one already…then check out this recipe. I pretty much love anything with dark chocolate and strawberries in it, so I need to buy an ice cream maker to make this. Not very thrifty, but hey…

IMG_2252And finally, check out this children’s china cabinet I got from the Sacramento Antique Faire on Sunday! It was marked down from $50 to $30 and it just needs a little love before it’s perfect! Cecilia already has a bunch of kitchen trinkets to fill it up with so she can work on her masterpiece while I’m in the kitchen.

Coffee and Muffins

Last weekend, my mom and I embarked on a new challenge. We must avoid all drive-thru eateries for an entire month. This wouldn’t be difficult for me, but I have a secret addiction to drive-thru Starbucks. Because sometimes when we’re on the road, I need a coffee. And almost all the time, I don’t want to have to lug my daughter out of the car and then back into the car to get a simple coffee.

The thought of walking to a little, hidden gem of a local coffee shop is a beautiful thought, except for the fact that I live nowhere near one. When I lived in downtown Sacramento, you could just turn in any direction and point, and a coffee shop would magically appear. But this is not the case.

So, it’s time to broaden the horizons. Since I will be more dependent on my at-home coffee-making skills more than ever, I’ve come to a conclusion. It’s time to stock up on some coffee from rad coffee shops when I come across one, and then get some rad travel mugs.

First of all, I love Mary Tyler Moore. I used to watch that show on TV Land before all my of childhood shows somehow wound up there, and before there was a DVR. This coffee mug not only brings a smile to my face and brings back memories of no responsibilities, it’s also kind of a perfect quote for my life right now. This ceramic mug has a plastic lid and is double-insulated. MC Simon, who made the mug and runs Mugoos, is a mama-of-two who was welder before running her own handmade ceramic shop.

Heartbreak Coffee is not actually local, but I read about this online coffee shop on Design*Sponge and I fell in love with the story. She brews and sells everything from her kitchen, and the first comment on her Coming Soon post was from her mom. I mean, come on.

So, I think this would be a great time to start reviewing different coffee shops – both local and online.

And what goes better with coffee than…

I used a recipe from The Granny Girls for these apple blueberry muffins and they were delicious – and good for you! I count them as a success because my boyfriend – the enemy of all that is health food – even enjoyed them. My muffins tend to be dry, but these were simply delightful. Moist (I know, I hate that word too), and every bite was filled with fruit.

The ingredients are below and you can get the full recipe here. I’m thinking of adding bananas next time (like, tomorrow).

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup turbinado sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup raisins or currants blueberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup apple juice (I didn’t have any so I used almond milk)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup apple sauce
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, beaten (or 2 egg whites)
  • 2-3 medium apples, unpeeled, finely chopped (or grated)

Why I loved this week

Untitled-1You are the company you keep. I have heard those words over and over again in my life. If your friends are truly a reflection of you who are as a person, you should be particular about who you choose. I can easily pinpoint phases in my life by the people I chose to hang out with. There are a couple people whose friendship carried over to now, and I can literally count them on one hand.

This also holds true in the online world, too. When I first got pregnant, I added and followed just about every mama blog on the planet, without giving it much thought. Then slowly but surely, I started weeding blogs and people out. Not that they weren’t lovely in their own right, but they weren’t right for me. I made a decision to be more particular about who I follow on social media and to keep it to inspiring people who motivated me to keep my creative dreams alive.

Because I made this adjustment, it’s really easy for me to find things I love to write about. There is always something creative, something meaningful and something wholehearted.

I love Design*Sponge not only because it’s such an amazing resource for beginner and advanced crafters alike, but also because of the topics they cover. When I first got into this site, I found a column called Biz Ladies, where they share biz lady profiles and also tips for ladies running the biz. Now, they just started a new column, Veterans and Startups, where they feature one veteran and one startup company in the same niche. This week, the focus was coffee. Grace posted the interview with Heartbreak Coffee (the startup) and followed it up with an interview with Intelligentsia Coffee (the veteran).

When I saw this today, it spoke to me. I am super blessed to have a DSLR, but I have not a clue how to use it. I’ve read photography tips here and there, and I am learning Photoshop through my design school, but I don’t have all the time in the world to mess with it. I would love to take beautiful shots from the get-go, and not have to worry so much about all of the editing. My usual problems are lighting and focus, so it would be awesome to get some tips. Not only does Amy hope  to motivate you to use your camera every day, she’s also sharing tips from her professional photography contributors, like Candace Moss of Mom and Pop Photo School, who is also hosting a giveaway on Mombot on Jan 20!

I loved this essay on blogging from The Day Book, it all felt so real and actually inspired me to start expressing myself more in each post I write. It also got me thinking about how I immediately assume that every other blogger is living this amazing life, where they have cupcakes every morning for breakfast, get new, free clothes shipped to them daily and they just craft all afternoon. Nobody does that (unless you do…then I want to meet you and be your best friend). We all have crappy days. And we all have amazing days. We all have meltdowns. And moments of pure bliss. Because, we’re all human.

This week was the week for inspiring essays because Joy from Oh Joy shared her thoughts and goals for 2014, and my girl Grace was on point with this essay on mindfulness.

So it’s no surprise that this post is going to be a little of all of that, minus the Valentines Day recipes and tips on organizing.

The 10-day ab challenge from Erin Motz Yoga is already in full swing, but the awesome thing about her challenges is that you can join in at any time. The videos remain on YouTube and while you won’t get the daily e-mails sent to your inbox, you will still get to check in daily, or as much as you wish. I always love doing her practices because they are lighthearted and fun, and chances are she will virtually toast you with champagne when the challenge is over.

You know all those detox cleanses that everyone posts the day after New Years? Well, this ain’t it. Over at Greatist, Sophia Breene has compiled a list of 49 satisfying yet detoxifying meals, and even better – categorizes them by meal type. Of course, you can eat these at any meal (for instance, I’m a huge fan of breakfast for dinner when nobody else is home), but the categories make it easy. There’s 8 breakfast options, 10 lunch options, 9 dinner options, 8 snack options and plenty of sides and drink options. You could easily use one recipe per day for 2 weeks (minus the weekends) and eat something new every day. My tip? Pick the recipes you want and make a grocery list of everything. Then do all your shopping in one trip and make a meal plan.

And I know I have talked about this before, but if you haven’t checked out Greatist’s Renew Year challenge, you definitely should. Each day, they post a new task and then you snap a photo and post it with the hashtag #healthyishappy. And don’t worry, not all of them are centered around exercise. One task was to write five things you’re grateful for, and another was to meditate for 10 minutes. It’s all about focusing on your health – mental and physical.

Weekly Wishes

Last week, I shared my goals for the year, and pretty much the future. This time around, I’m scaling back down a little and just focusing on my weekly goals. While it’s good to have a broad idea of what you want to achieve, you still need to work on the small steps in order to get there. It’s been a few weeks since I wrote my Weekly Wishes, so I’m starting fresh. That’s what new years are for anyway, right?

This week’s goals:

Blog: Write at least one post a day, e-mail people for possible profiles, post on social media daily // I’m starting to get my routine down. It’s easiest for me to write the post the night before and then edit and add the photos in the morning. It gives me a chance to think over the post and come back to it fresh in the morning. And I might poke into social media a little here and there during the day but it’s easiest for me to do it after the baby is asleep.

Business: List Kandyce’s items and create our Facebook page // We have a lot of items listed in our Sweet Mariposa shop, but I haven’t done a whole lot of marketing for it, and Facebook/Twitter will help out a ton with that.

Health: Start the yoga challenge with the lovely Erin Motz (I’ll be 5 days late, but what the heck) and keep all of our meals whole and clean // I think I can squeeze in a yoga practice in the morning before Cecilia wakes or save it for when she naps or goes down for the night. Depending on everyone’s schedule. I need to find at least 30 minutes in the day for some yoga love, though.

Freelance: Write my Handmadeology article, and start my article for Childhood Magazine // Super excited to be writing for both and I can’t wait to see what comes from both opportunities!

My Healthy Life: A Manifesto

Before writing this post, I thought I would revisit what I wrote around this time last year. I had just signed up for Weight Watchers again, and had already lost close to 20 lbs since having my baby (she was a month old at the time – crazy to imagine, eh). Since then, I have made some major changes.

While Weight Watchers totally kicked my butt into gear and helped me learn from the food and activity choices I was making, I have opted for a complete lifestyle change and ultimately chose a route where I wouldn’t have to pay a monthly fee to be told how to eat. I also was not completely behind the idea where you get count points based on caloric intake – tricking people into believing that diet food is healthier for you, when it can often be worse.

I don’t want to focus on consuming diet food, but rather consuming food that is real, whole, good for you and delicious. My healthy goals for this year are to: workout for 30 minutes per day, practice yoga for 30 minutes a day and cook all of our meals from scratch. Sure, there will be times where we go out to eat. I am in no way perfect when it comes to my diet, and I think 99% of people can agree with that. But I will be more conscious when I do go out to eat. That’s all you gotta do. Be conscious.

I also want to focus more on remixing recipes by substituting good, healthy ingredients where they are needed and I will continue sharing my concoctions with you.

In case you are also resolving to get more fitness and healthy food in your life for the next year, here are a few websites that really helped me last year:

  • Greatist: This is one of the first websites I got into when I started this health kick. I attempted many a health challenge through Greatist, and while I barely ever stuck with them – I learned a lot and I love how proactive and fun the writers are. They actually created Renew Year, where they post new challenges each morning and you share on Twitter when you complete the challenge with the hashtag #healthyishappy. I love it!
  • The Gracious Pantry – This is by far one of my favorite sites and has truly motivated me to keep eating real and good food. Her recipes are all clean and she has good ones! My family loves every recipe I make…and that is really saying a lot. Because they hate anything with the word healthy in it.
  • DoYouYoga.com – I love this yoga site, and I love Erin Motz. She always makes yoga practice fun, and they’re always adding new videos. She has really inspired me to pursue a yoga instructor certification, and that is one of my goals now.
  • Fitness Blender – I found this couple through YouTube, and I love their workouts. They’re quick, but get the job done. They also do different challenges that you can join in, and they often post videos talking about nutrition and health – which I love. It’s not about being skinny for them, it’s about being healthy.

While you may not be on your A-game all the time, as long as you are eating good food and remaining active, you’ll be fine. I promise.  Let’s do this not to be skinny – let’s do it to be healthy. Most of all, let’s DO IT.

Dressing my daughter up like a housewife, of course! The costume did not turn out the way I wanted it to, of course. But it was still awesome and we had quite the photo shoot! This was my favorite picture because it describes us to a tee. I was supposed to be a hipster housewife (I know, I really had to reach far for that one…) but you can’t really see my outfit so I just look like a hobo – which isn’t too far off from my normal look. And I think I love that scarf. It was buried deep with all my other scarves but I think that will be a staple.
