Maternity Style Inspiration

Maternity Style InspirationThe other day I was folding my clean laundry and I started chuckling because I realized that my PJs and yoga pants were slowly starting to overtake my life again. And since the majority of my maternity clothes that have already reappeared in my closet are more suited for the fall, I am determined to add some Summer style to my wardrobe.

After spending a small fortune on maternity clothes last year – only to learn that they would not be in the cycle for long – I refuse to make that same mistake again. I’ve found some DIY maternity clothing tutorials, used maternity clothes and some easy and cheap accessories that should make the transition simple and cheap. Just my style.

Of course, my first stop was Pinterest. Where I found this beauty from A Beautiful Mess, one of my favorite sites for DIY and design inspiration.

This DIY Maternity Wrap Dress is freaking adorable, and since it doesn’t require me to use a sewing machine, it looks pretty simple! You just need four yards of fabric and the entire tutorial with photos is in the post.

It was also through Pinterest that I found my newest obsession – Cotton and Curls. She shares A LOT of DIY clothing tutorials, and even has a maternity section! Her posts make even the very beginners of seamstresses (hi, me) feel like they could actually make this stuff.

It was actually hard for me to pick just one post that I wanted to feature, but I just fell in love with this DIY Very gathered A-Line skirt when I saw it. The fabric is from Sarah Jane, and the entire tutorial with photos is in the post. She also noted that with the elastic and gathering, this skirt is not limited to maternity.

And if you don’t feel like making your own stuff (I get it), ThredUp has some pretty cute used maternity clothes, like this casual skirt from Motherhood, which retails for $27, but is selling for $8.49. I always get a little anxious about buying clothes online because I don’t know how they fit, but since I’ve worn Motherhood before, I feel comfortable with their sizes.

And if you were wondering what to do with your tights since your pregnant self is not going to fit into them during this hot season, turn them into head wraps, like the ladies of Prudent Baby showed on the YouTube Channel, The Mom’s View! I’m not a tights fan to begin with, but I could certainly get some cheap pairs for this project! You can find more head wrap inspiration on Honestly, WTF – another awesome site I landed on today.

If you are also expecting, how are you styling your cute lil pregnant self this summer? Share any inspiration, tips and DIY tutorials in the comments and connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google + and Pinterest!

Fridays are for Favorites

fridays are for favorites

A couple weeks ago, I decided to switch up my Fridays are for Favorites post, and I wrote about my favorite things that happened that week. I enjoyed writing that post so much, that I decided to write my future Friday posts like that! I will be listing my favorite things that happened, or that I discovered, through the week and sharing them with you! This could be a new Etsy store I found, an awesome new tutorial I landed on, a delicious recipe I found…anything! So, let the fun begin!

Encourage Beauty Challenge from In Honor of Design – Hilary Rushford from Dean Street Society and Anna at In Honor of Design have joined forces for an amazing Instagram challenge that is all about encouraging beauty. I was unfamiliar with both sites until I saw someone else share this Challenge on Twitter. Another nod to the power of sharing through social media. The Challenge and details are on either site but I encourage you to check them both out, if you haven’t already.

And my absolute favorite thing about this week….

Dressing my daughter up like a housewife, of course! The costume did not turn out the way I wanted it to, of course. But it was still awesome and we had quite the photo shoot! This was my favorite picture because it describes us to a tee. I was supposed to be a hipster housewife (I know, I really had to reach far for that one…) but you can’t really see my outfit so I just look like a hobo – which isn’t too far off from my normal look. And I think I love that scarf. It was buried deep with all my other scarves but I think that will be a staple.

What are your favorite things from this week? Share them in the comments and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #fridayfavorites You can find more Friday inspiration on my Pinterest!

Gettin fit: Old clothes challenge

Do you have a rice cooker? I do. I attempted cooking rice several times before purchasing said rice cooker, and let’s just say it never worked out. On one occasion, I was so afraid to burn the rice that I barely cooked it…and my friend seriously had to ask what exactly I was attempting. Is it rice soup? Were you going for hard rice? The next time, I was a little more relaxed about cooking the rice, and it ended up burnt. Since rice is a staple in my house, I decided it was time to purchase a rice cooker. And since I’m also a fan of multi-purpose appliances, I was happy to find this article by Emily Ho for the Kitchn. (Side note, you should totally check out Emily Ho’s website. She’s awesome).

Turns out, you can make steel cut oats, polenta, beans and frittata in the rice cooker! You can click on the photo or on the link above to get directions for making all of this. While we are on the topic of making wonderful food, here’s an awesome recipe for steel cut oats! They’re super good for you, and perfect for the colder weather.

Clean Eating Pumpkin Oatmeal – If you have ever visited my blog before, you know how deep my obsession with pumpkin runs. I’m also slightly obsessed (ok, maybe a little bit more than slightly) obsessed with The Gracious Pantry. This looks like a wonderful recipe that I have yet to try. It’s something you could also make on a Sunday and finish throughout the week…which is the easiest and best way for me to eat breakfast.

I WAS ABLE TO DO YOGA THIS MORNING! My baby girl has not been sleeping well lately, but she actually slept in her own crib all night long, and slept long enough for me to squeeze in a quick practice this morning! It felt so good and I feel so rejuvenated now. I can seriously take on the world. So, watch out, world.

I also got back into my routine with the Beginner Bodyweight Workout Plan from GB Personal Training. I’m doing Week 1 over again, since I got a little off path last week. I have decided to stick with low-impact workouts and yoga for my fitness needs. I’m more likely to stay on track and it’s kind of hard to carry and play with a baby when your legs feel like jelly and you can barely move. Sure, it’s a sign of a good workout, but it’s kind of pointless if I can’t do anything after.
