Gettin fit: Old Clothes Challenge

Current weight: 143 | Fitness goal: Yoga and workout every day | Food goal: Eat as clean as possible

A couple weeks ago, I decided to stop the 365 Days of Yoga Challenge on Instagram. I still practice yoga and I try to fit it in every day, but sometimes, it just doesn’t happen. One day I was practicing, and I realized mid-practice that I forgot to bring my phone in to snap a picture for the Challenge. When I got back into the practice, I didn’t feel the same. I was too busy worrying about getting a good shot. And do you know how many truly good poses you can capture when you are the one doing the poses, and taking the photos? About two.

Cecilia is also getting a whole lot more active and just wants to walk around all day. Since she can’t walk by herself yet, she depends on me to hold her hands while she cruises the house. When I’m not busy playing with her, I’m cleaning the house, taking online design classes and turning my love for writing into a career. So, if I happen to miss a workout, it’s not the end of the world for me anymore. She gives me plenty of a workout, anyway!

Now that the weather has cooled down a little, I’m going to take her on walks a lot more, since that not only helps me get in shape, it’s good bonding time with her and it helps me relax and take everything in. Since I’m not working out as much as I was, I need to stay focused on eating better. Since joining the Real Food Challenge with Eat Hugger and Erin Motz, I’ve tried a few new recipes.

Yesterday I tried the Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese but used pumpkin instead, since that’s what I had, and it’s what I love the most. It was so delicious, no joke. I use lunch time as my time to experience with different food since my family isn’t all into that. So, I made some yesterday and I’ll eat it every day for lunch until it’s gone. Since becoming a mom, I’ve learned to enjoy the same food for several days in a row.

The picture isn’t blurry. That’s the steam coming off my pasta. Delightful!

I know that I probably could squeeze at least 30 minutes of working out and stretching into my day every day. I think I’m going to work on doing yoga in the morning or at night, and then a walk with the baby. If I can get more in, that would be awesome…but every day is a new day! As long as I keep the house clean, get my homework done, and most of all, keep my baby happy, then life is good.

What are your biggest struggles with keeping a schedule or routine? Share them in the comments and on Facebook and Twitter. You can follow more of my fitness inspiration on Pinterest and can keep up with my Old Clothes Challenge on Instagram. Hopefully the next time I update this, I will be able to fit into some more of those old clothes!

Gettin fit: Old clothes challenge

Goals: 30 min of yoga/ 30 min workout daily | Eat 2-3 clean meals daily

Well, this past week I have a slipped a little, but I’m getting back to my routine. I decided to stop posting my “365 days of yoga” challenge pictures on Instagram. I found that I was so worried about getting a shot of the pose I was on that I wasn’t fully into my routine. Today was my first practice without taking any photos, and I felt like I got a lot more out of it.

So, I have 12 weeks left of my old clothes challenge and I have about 18 lbs I would love to shed. That’s a little over a lb a week and I do believe that I can do it. I just need to stick to my goals. For those of you who want to eat a little better and workout a little more, here is some inspiration:

I’m going to attempt this Italian Quinoa tonight for dinner. I got the recipe from the 30 Day Real Food Challenge with Eat Hugger and my girl Erin Motz. The challenge is definitely a good way to get into eating real food and there are some pretty good recipes in there.

I have been religiously following Fitness Blender for all of my workouts thus far, but I dig this 30 minute Bodyweight Workout from Greatist. While I think I get more from following the videos since I get to see exactly how you are supposed to do each pose, I do love listening to my tunes while I workout, so these are great. Also, I can print this out and take it outside if I want to take my workout outside.

So, I’m interested to see how my family will react to the quinoa tonight. I almost want to keep my camera out to capture the excitement.

After my week-long break from working out (our whole house was sick…it sucked), I’m trying to get back into my routine. My baby was so used to cuddling with me all day long for a week straight, she’s also having a hard time of getting back into the routine of hanging with herself while I try to get some stuff done around here. So, I’ve gotten back into working out with my baby.

I’m still doing the 365 Days of Yoga Challenge and the poses are turning more into a flow, rather than just going from pose to pose. It’s just hard to get in my night yoga, so I need to set aside some time for it. Here is my new fitness routine:

Monday: Baby workout

Tuesday: Resistance band

Wednesday: Kettle bell

Thursday: Wii Fit

Friday: Bodyweight

Saturday: Stroll with the babe

Sunday: Stroll with the babe

These mom and baby exercises from The Daily Green are still my favorite mom and baby exercises. Cecilia absolutely loves when I do the Shoulder Press, Glute Lifts and Leg Lifts, which makes it fun to watch her get all excited. Now that she’s a lot more active, she has a harder time just sitting with me, so when I involve her in this stuff, she loves it.

I also started the Real Food Challenge, with my favorite yoga instructor, Erin Motz, through Eat Hugger. Since I’ve been following the Clean Eating lifestyle for a while now, this doesn’t look too hard. This is also a good site in general for finding recipes with whole foods in them. My only problem is getting the food for it. I’ll be in Sacramento this weekend so I’m hoping to hit up the farmers markets while I’m there.

They are also open to contributors who want to write articles about healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. So if this is something you are into and you love to write, you should consider checking them out. I don’t think they pay but it’s a good outlet, and a good way to get more traffic to your personal blog.

I have been able to fit into some of my old clothes that weren’t so attractive when I tried to put them on a month ago, so that makes me feel good! I’m waiting until I hit 140 before I do my first closet purge. Only 6 lbs left to go before I do that! I’m feeling a lot better (not so sluggish) and I feel a lot healthier than I did just a little while ago. I’m loving all of these changes!

IMG_5294To know me is to know that I will plan my birthday months in advance. Normally, it’s because I plan on having a month (or week if I’m poor) long celebration. This time around, I’m planning it because that’s when I plan to meet my goal. Since my birthday is in 3 months, I’m giving myself that amount of time to kick it into high gear. I know, I know…I’ve set goals before and never stuck to them. But hey, maybe it will work this time.

The baby and I are starting to get our schedule down and now that she’s into her walker and playing with all of her toys in her playpen, I have a little more time to work out and practice yoga. I do try to include her in my workouts, but now that she’s mobile, she would rather not. I’ve also started baking all my breads on Saturdays and Sundays when I have more help. Then, I use them all week. And it works!

I have found all of my workouts so far on Fitness Blender. They have quick workouts and I always feel good afterwards. Sore, but good. And of course, for my yoga needs, I stick with Erin Motz and Do You Yoga. I just love her.

Tonight, I’m going to cook my black beans and oatmeal so they are ready for tomorrow. I got my black beans in a bag, so this will be my first time preparing them. We’ll see how it goes! I’m finding it easier to stick to my clean eating lifestyle, and I’m feeling a lot better.

Posting my yoga and workout sessions daily has really helped me stay on track. I just don’t want this blog to be over-saturated with workout stuff. So, I decided to start a healthy blog called too fit to be square. I upload pictures of my workout sessions, good food I made, recipes, workout tutorials and videos I found and just general healthy inspiration.

I will still be updating this blog about my healthy journey every week, but that blog will be updated daily.

Feel free to follow my blog if you are needing a little inspiration, and you can join my old clothes challenge by using the hashtag #oldclotheschallenge on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can find more healthy living inspiration on my Pinterest.

A dose of healthy inspiration

Today couldn’t be a better day to feel inspired and motivated to get in shape. I signed up a while ago to be a blogger at the Daily Hiit blog and I just got all of my login information. This makes me an official blogger at The DailyHiit! I guess this means I should really step up my workout game, eh?

While I do try to practice yoga daily, I have a hard time completing any workouts. I’ve done a few resistance band and kettle bell workouts, but I haven’t exactly been keeping up with it. I found a lot of workouts that I could do on this website, and some good recipes, too. I love any fitness site that also includes recipes. As we all know, this girl can eat!

I feel like this is the perfect way to get inspired and start back on the right track.

I just signed up for the Beginner Challenge from the Daily Hiit to get me started in the right direction so we will see how that goes! I’m thinking it’s time to start a 365 days of fitness challenge now and hopefully I won’t lose too many friends on Instagram and Twitter!

So now that I have rediscovered my love for the Daily Hiit, it’s time to find a new clean-eating website, too. Don’t get me wrong. The Gracious Pantry will continue being my go-to clean eating site, but there’s always room for more healthy recipes!

Here’s a good resource on what’s viewed as clean eating and what’s not. It’s pretty simple. All the good, whole food is clean. But anything that has been chemically treated, had sugars added to it or just simply has no nutritional value at all, is not so clean.

And here’s my new clean eating and fitness site that I found on Pinterest: Whole Foods New Body, she has a lot of good recipes, including a meatloaf that I think even my boyfriend will like. Which is always a score for me! I like these mommy fitness sites because they are geared towards moms, who have little time to work out.

Sure, I love having my baby rolling around me every chance I get, but let me tell you, when you’re trying to do a plank and she’s getting in your way every time you try to lay down, it can get challenging. I need workouts that I can do while she’s napping and, you know, after the house is cleaned, laundry is folded and put away, and all of my homework and work are done.

If you have any clean eating and fitness inspiration that you would like to share, feel free to do so in the comments or share on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #sofreshsoclean. You can also check out my Pinterest more fitness and clean inspiration.

Hoping to hit up Trader Joe’s this weekend for some goodies!

So fresh and so clean

Current weight: 153

Monthly goals: No fast food/ Yoga + Workout daily

So, I’ve decided that instead of calculating and sharing my weight every week, I’m going to do it monthly. In between my monthly check-in’s, I’ll share some food and exercises that I find inspiring and hopefully even profile some inspiring people who have made huge lifestyle changes for the better.

So, to start things off, let’s talk about my most favorite thing ever. FOOD! Yesterday, I wrote about some awesome grapefruit treats that I found. And one of them was grapefruit brulee, which might actually become my new favorite treat. Super easy to do, minimal ingredients, and so very good.

Feeling inspired (and too tired to make anything strenuous) this morning, I decided to try out this grapefruit brulee, and it was seriously everything I could ask for. The grapefruit was soft and warm and the cinnamon melted so perfectly into every little bite that the grapefruit tasted more sweet and any remnants of bitterness was gone.

IMG_4954And, now for the exercise part, of course. I am still continuing with my 365 days of yoga challenge and I have seen a huge change in how much easier it is for me to do all of the poses now. I also don’t feel as stressed out as I used to and I don’t have as much pain anymore. Of course, I take a couple days off here and there, and I can feel it every time I do. Last week, I injured my knee at my brother’s wedding (long story) so now I’m rockin a knee brace, but I still stick to my practice as much as I can.

IMG_4705 IMG_4729 IMG_4761 IMG_4778 IMG_4820 IMG_4827 IMG_4831 IMG_4948 IMG_4964

I have to say, my favorite yoga inspiration, by far, has been Erin Motz with Do You Yoga. She’s just so easygoing, and her practices aren’t long at all, which fits in perfectly with my lifestyle. She has really inspired me to look into becoming a trainer, after I get a few more hours under my belt, of course.

And for some more workout inspiration, I found this awesome exercise online.

This kettlebell workout from Women’s Health doesn’t look like it would be that hard, but man did it make me sweat! This is perfect to do while your little one is crawling around, or something quick while he/she is napping. I would not suggest using your baby as a kettlebell though. That could end badly.

Please share any “clean living” and/or exercise inspirations! Post them in the comments or share them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #sofreshsoclean. You can also check out my Pinterest for more clean and fit inspiration.

Gettin fit: 365 days of yoga/ journey to the skirt

gettin fit: journey to the skirt

Current weight: 152

Goals: 2 clean meals per day, 1 hour of exercise a day (30 min yoga, 30 min cardio)

I did really good this week with my daily yoga. But when I missed a day yesterday, everything kind of felt off. I mean..it was a good day for sure, but something was missing. When you get into a groove, just taking one day off can really throw you for a loop!

So I got back into the groove this morning and I instantly felt better. Not that the yoga practice was easy by any means. Although the 30 day Challenge with Do You Yoga is over (which I am NOT pleased about!), I’m still looking up their videos on YouTube and following my favorite instructor, Erin Motz. She’s kind of insane, but she also toasted the last day of the challenge with red wine, so she’s also kind of amazing.

IMG_4597 IMG_4606 IMG_4621 IMG_4632 IMG_4650 photo

Aside from working out, the diet has been going so-so. I know what I should and should not eat, and I’m definitely a believer in the “out of convenience” theory. I genuinely enjoy fruit, vegetables, whole grains and other awesome healthy food. Seriously. But when it’s not easily available, I have a hard time staying focused. So that’s where my problem is. And with that…I have found some yummy food to have for the 4th of July BBQ’s and parties coming up!

First of all…check out this clean strawberry lemonade from The Gracious Pantry! It would be perfect mixed with Iced Tea for an Arnold Palmer remix. I honestly cannot wait to try it. Like, tomorrow. I’ll probably try it tomorrow.

I’ve come to realize that I don’t actually use a lot of the healthy recipes that I post…all because the people that I cook for don’t want to venture that far out from their normal palette. Let them cook for themselves, you say? No thank you. If I honestly let Sam fend for himself, he would just eat a bag of chips and be perfectly fine. I’d rather just save the adventurous food for when I’m cooking for myself and stick to the regular food for them. So I’ll be posting some weird, crazy food along with normal food. And when it comes to BBQ, it will have to be normal food since you don’t typically BBQ for yourself. And since I don’t know how to operate such a machine quite yet.

Citrus grilled chicken from The Gracious Pantry would be perfect for our house. You can even cut it up and put it in your tacos! Or make a lil chicken flatbread sandwich. Now I’m not really a meaty kind of girl, so for the girls and boys who would rather veggies…here’s an option!

Grilled Cumin-Lime Zucchini Quesadilla from Naturally Ella – This looks amazing and I think I could even talk some carnivores I know to try this out. I found this website through BuzzFeed’s 38 Awesome Vegetarian Grilling Recipes and I fell in love with the site. She even has recipes for the bulk bins….which I’ve never seen on a website before!
